Wild bilberry juice - properties:

Wild bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a plant species from the heath family (Ericaceae), also known as the bilberry or European blueberry. It is a herbaceous plant that occurs naturally in coniferous and mixed forests in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in cooler areas.

  1. Richness of antioxidants: Wild bilberries are known for their high antioxidant content, such as vitamin C, vitamin E and flavonoids. These substances help fight oxidative stress in the body, which can lead to cell damage and contribute to the development of many chronic diseases.

  2. Beneficial effect on vision: The content of vitamin A and anthocyanins can support eye health, protecting them from the harmful effects of UV radiation and reducing the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

  3. Improving heart health: Ingredients present in bilberries, such as anthocyanins, help in maintaining heart health by influencing the lowering of blood pressure, reducing the level of bad cholesterol (LDL) and improving the elasticity of blood vessels.

  4. Supporting brain functions: Wild bilberries are often considered "brain food", as they contain phytochemicals that can support cognitive function and memory. Research suggests that consuming bilberries can help maintain healthy brain functioning with age.

  5. Regulation of blood sugar levels: Due to the low glycaemic index and the presence of fibre, bilberries can help in stabilising blood sugar levels, which is particularly beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes.

  6. Strengthening the immune system: Vitamin C present in bilberries is known for its immune system-strengthening properties. Regular consumption of bilberries can help in preventing infections and diseases.

  7. Benefits for the skin: Antioxidants and vitamins present in bilberries have the potential to improve skin health, delaying the ageing process and supporting skin healing.

  8. Low calorie content: Bilberries are low in calories and rich in water, which can help in maintaining a healthy weight and controlling appetite.

Wild bilberry juice - dosage, usage:

Dosage of wild bilberry juice for adults usually amounts to about 50–100 ml daily, preferably in divided portions of 25–50 ml. In the case of children, smaller amounts are recommended, for example 20–50 ml daily, depending on age and the body's reaction. The juice can be consumed on its own or diluted with water, and it is best taken during a meal, which supports digestion and the absorption of nutrients.

Contraindications: Wild bilberry juice should not be consumed by people allergic to bilberries or other berry fruits, as it can trigger allergic reactions. Due to the properties of lowering sugar levels, people with hypoglycaemia or using diabetes medication should consult a doctor before starting regular consumption. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also obtain medical approval. Furthermore, bilberry juice can affect blood clotting, therefore people taking anticoagulants should remain cautious.
