1. How is honey from the popular acacia made?

Acacia honey is a fully natural honey obtained from acacia nectar. The acacia flower, whose scientific name is Robinia Pseudoacacia, belongs to the Fabaceae family. These are trees with large crowns and long branches that provide a very intense fragrance. Acacia honey is characterised by a very light colour, almost transparent, and a very light consistency with a very neutral floral aroma. Furthermore, it usually does not crystallise, too quickly. As for the taste, it is rather neutral and smooth. It is its mild flavour that makes acacia honey often used as a natural sweetener[1].

Acacia honey is a valuable source of substances beneficial to the human body. Like all honey, acacia honey consists mainly of carbohydrates – accounting for about 80% of its weight. The remaining 20% is water, a small amount of protein, as well as ingredients such as vitamins, elements, flavonoids, organic acids, mucilage, and essential oils. Acacia honey is a honey rich in fructose, also having a high concentration of sucrose in its composition. That is why it is a product with a strong sweet aftertaste. The different structure of this valuable raw material also extends its crystallisation period.

2. Health properties of acacia honey.

Thanks to its various properties, acacia honey has been used for centuries as a therapeutic agent for treating various ailments or conditions:

  • Improves blood circulation: Acacia honey is used on many occasions to stimulate proper blood circulation. In particular, it contributes to the production of red blood cells and platelets which improve blood flow.

  • Natural sweetener: Thanks to its low glycaemic index, acacia honey is often used as a natural sweetener. It is therefore an ideal food in restrictive diets, for diabetics or people who do not want to consume industrial sugars. To do this, a good solution is to consume one or two tablespoons of honey along with nuts or wholemeal bread before starting exercise.

  • Reduces constipation: The truth is that this honey has numerous laxative properties, and through its consumption, it can contribute to reducing intestinal inflammation and detoxifying the liver.

  • Calming effect: One of the greatest benefits of honey refers to its calming and relaxing effect, which helps to combat many nervous and anxiety disorders; as well as stress or insomnia. To do this, simply add a teaspoon or two of acacia honey to a drink, which will contribute to better rest[2].

3. Acacia honey is good for diabetics

Honey has a significantly lower GI (glycaemic index) compared to table sugar. Most blended honeys on the market have a moderate GI between 45 and 64, which is lower than sugar – white or brown – at level 65. The GI varies depending on the fructose level – the more fructose, the lower the GI. Because fructose does not increase blood glucose levels and does not require insulin, people with diabetes often tolerate it better than other sugars. In fact, research shows that small amounts of orally administered fructose can actually improve glycaemic control in people with diabetes, as it can help prevent spikes in blood glucose levels. Acacia honey has the highest fructose content. It is worth knowing how different honeys have different properties. In this case, acacia honey is good for diabetics due to its high fructose content[3].

4. Acacia honey has antibacterial properties.

Many of the healing properties of acacia honey are likely attributed to its antibacterialaction. Honey contains the components needed for the production and slow release of small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a type of acid that kills bacteria by destroying their cell walls. One study found that acacia honey proved effective against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, two types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. It was concluded that the high level of potent hydrogen peroxide was likely responsible for this[4].

As you can see, acacia honey contains many valuable ingredients that have a beneficial effect on our health. A great advantage of this type of honey is the fact that it can be consumed by people suffering from diabetes.
