Honey as a cosmetic

  • added: 25-08-2026

Honey as a cosmetic

Dermatologists have recommended real honey as a natural cosmetic for years for many reasons. Medical recommendations suggest sticking to buckwheat honey due to its high level of antioxidants. If buckwheat honey is unavailable, simply look for dark, raw honey – the darker the honey, the higher the number of antioxidants and the better the effects for your skincare routine. Dark honeys include primarily honeydew honey, alongside the buckwheat honey mentioned. The best honey as a cosmetic for care is simply raw and unpasteurised.

Table of contents:

  1. Honey as a moisturising face mask.
  2. Gentle honey peeling.
  3. Honey for fading scars.
  4. Honey for wound healing.
  5. Honey for acne.
  6. Honey as a bath liquid.
  7. Honey as a daily use conditioner.
  8. Honey lip balm.
  9. Honey as relief after burns.

  1. Honey as a moisturising face mask.

Thanks to its moisturising and soothing properties, raw honey can hydrate the skin, leaving it soft and radiant. The sugars in honey act as natural humectants and emollients that increase water content and reduce skin dryness even after it is washed off. Thanks to this, we can successfully use natural honey as a moisturising face mask.

It is recommended, whenever possible, to choose raw honey with a high content of other bee products, such as propolis, which acts as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial (so a great benefit for acne-prone skin); or pollen, which „contains a compound called rutin, which helps drain capillaries” and smooths discolouration; royal jelly, which is the main source of collagen boosting. In this way, you can elevate your routine. We recommend taking a look at honeys with additives in our offer: among them you will find blends of real honey with precious bee products, and above all honey with ground pollen recommended in the discussed care treatment. The process of grinding pollen releases its properties enclosed in a hard chitin shell.

How to use honey on the skin? Apply raw honey directly to the skin and leave for up to 20 minutes, then rinse and wash thoroughly with water.

  1. Gentle honey peeling.

Since raw honey crystallises over time, the fine granules act as a gentle exfoliant. They begin to break down when they come into contact with water and the heat of the skin, resulting in a gentler scrub than harsher shop-bought products. And because it is antibacterial, it can be used for daily face washing.

How to use honey as a gentle honey peeling? Warm the honey in your hands by first rubbing it between your fingers, then apply it directly to the skin in circular motions. Leave for a few minutes, then massage with a wet towel.

  1. Honey for fading scars.

The antioxidant properties contained in honey (especially in buckwheat honey) nourish damaged skin, helping in the scar healing process. For an added anti-inflammatory benefit, look out for honey with propolis – it can help alleviate the appearance of stretch marks and skin discolouration.

How to use honey for fading scars? Massage raw honey directly onto the affected area in circular motions for one to two minutes, then rinse.

  1. Honey for wound healing.

As Dr Engelman says, honey's natural antiseptic properties help prevent infection and heal wounds, which can reduce scarring and shorten healing time.  The antioxidants in honey (especially phacelia honey) are more than ready to serve as a natural remedy to nourish damaged skin and restore its untainted glow. Thanks to this honey can be successfully used for wound healing.

How to use honey on wounds? Apply raw honey directly to the affected area and leave for one to two minutes, then rinse. If the stickiness of the honey is too bothersome, it is worth going to the pharmacy for branded honey-based medicines with effects indicated for use on wounds. Such a solution will not be bothersome due to the high stickiness of honey.

  1. Honey for acne.

Buckwheat honey is a great DIY (home-made) remedy for acne. It is an anti-inflammatory that helps reduce the redness and swelling of pimples, and its antibacterial properties can help fight acne-causing bacteria, especially if administered with propolis. Furthermore, because honey keeps the skin well-hydrated and balanced, it helps control sebum production.

How to use honey for acne? Apply raw honey directly onto the pimple, then rinse after 10-15 minutes.

  1. Honey as a bath liquid.

Take your relaxation goals to the next level and take a bath with honey. The moisturising properties of honey will leave the skin silky soft.

How to use honey as a bath liquid? Make your own home-made honey bath liquid by mixing two large tablespoons of any raw honey in one cup of warm water (no more than 40 degrees Celsius) until the honey dissolves. Pour it into a bathtub with warm water.

  1. Honey as a conditioner for daily use.

Honey is an excellent conditioner, as it has humectant properties, it traps and attracts moisture, making the hair smooth and healthy. Your hair strands will be soft, nourished, and will have plenty of life and bounce.

How to use? Mix a quarter cup of our honey with enough fresh water to thin it out and distribute it through your hair. After shampooing, rub it into damp hair for a few minutes, then rinse with warm water.

  1. Honey lip balm

Honey is a great skin moisturiser, so it is also perfect for chapped lips. The moisturising benefits combined with natural enzymes, antioxidants and minerals hydrate the lips well.

How to make home-made honey lip balm? apply raw honey directly to the lips, leave for a few minutes, then wash off.

  1. Honey as relief after burns.

The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and moisturising properties of honey are very soothing for irritated and stinging burns (even sunburn). In addition, its thickness acts as a barrier against any infections that may get into the burn, so there is no need to cover it with gauze after applying honey.

How to use honey for relief after burns? Clean the burn, then rub a few drops of honey into the area and leave as long as you like (warning- it will get messy) before rinsing. Reapply as needed.
